The Shape of a De-Arbitrarized Formulation

A de-arbitrarized formulation is one whose remaining freedom no longer hides the determinants of action or evaluation. The process of Progressive De-Arbitrarization is complete, relative to a decision context, when the formulation has acquired a specific shape.

First, the live ambiguity has been localized. The formulation no longer distributes its uncertainty diffusely across multiple layers while pretending to be more determinate than it is. It is clear whether the unresolved issue lives in ontology, dynamics, normativity, environment assumptions, or stopping criteria.

Second, forced structure and contingent policy have been separated. What must be true for the problem class is no longer entangled with what has merely been chosen. This is one of the central marks of closure. A formulation that still mixes necessity with preference remains unstable even if its language sounds precise.

Third, residual policy has become explicit. If a choice remains, it is named as a choice. If multiple choices remain, they are enumerable. If they conflict, their precedence is specified. The formulation no longer smuggles policy in under the appearance of obviousness, style, or implementation detail.

Fourth, decision-inert distinctions have been collapsed. The formulation no longer carries verbal or representational differences that do not alter admissible continuation or evaluation under the present decision context. Such distinctions may still exist in principle, but they no longer burden the active object of reasoning.

Fifth, admissible continuations are now structurally legible. One can see what follows from the formulation without depending on tacit supplementation by the guide, the author, or hidden background assumptions. The formulation has become capable of guiding action directly.

Sixth, the formulation is stable under re-derivation. Reapplying the same reasoning process does not change its admissible continuations, outcomes, or evaluations in a decision-relevant way. Closure therefore has a fixed-point character: the formulation no longer shifts under further clarification except into equivalents that make no difference under the current decision context.

Seventh, further refinement has become inert relative to the current context. One may still descend further in an absolute sense, but no further descent changes what may be done, what counts, or how outcomes differ in a way that matters for the task at hand. This is closure under Progressive De-Arbitrarization: not infinite completeness, but sufficiency without concealed arbitrariness.

This state can be summarized compactly. A de-arbitrarized formulation is one in which:

What has been achieved is therefore not mere clarity in language, but clarity in determination. The formulation no longer requires an unseen chooser standing behind it. What remains to be chosen is visible. What is already fixed is visible. What does not matter has been released.
